Kidnap accused denied bail

THE Laventille man charged by police with being in possession of some of the ransom money paid for the safe release of San Fernando businessman Gregory Laing was yesterday refused bail when he appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate. The accused, 29-year-old Jesten Superville, stood before acting Chief Magistrate Maria Busby Earle-Caddle in the Eighth Port of Spain Magistrate’s Court charged with having in his possession $2,500 which formed part of the proceeds delivered as a ransom for the safe release of Laing. Superville was alleged to have had the money in his possession on July 1 at his Picton Road, Laventille, home. Upon his appearance and after the charge was read, defence attorney Criston J Williams, who along with attorney Chelsea John appeared for the accused, made an application for bail. Williams admitted that his client had previously found himself in trouble with the law, but never missed one of his court dates. The attorney said the offence was a bailable one and if bail were to be granted, Superville would not abscond.
