T&T lawyer blames “institutional failure” after state witness killed

The Trinidad and Tobago lawyer who had previously represented a state witness who was shot and killed in Diego Martin, Sunday night, says his death is the result of “institutional failure”.
Attorney Criston Williams says his client, 29-year-old Jehlano Romney, was the main witness in the case in which police constable Clarence Gilkes was killed earlier this year.
But Mr. Williams said Mr. Romney wanted to give information about corrupt police officers and had asked to be placed under witness protection.
His request was not granted.
The attorney questioned what will happen to others who wish to come forward with information against the Trinidad and Tobago Police Services.
Constable Gilkes was among a party of 12 police officers, who had responded to a report that men were seen brandishing guns along Rich Plain Road in Diego Martin on April 22 this year.
Police initially claimed there was an exchange of gunfire after armed persons on the roadway shot at them.
Romney was singled out as a person of interest in the shooting, but he maintained his innocence.
One of the police officers has since been charged with the murder of Gilkes and remanded in custody.
