93 Venezuelans deported: Lawyers fail to save asylum seekers

Attorneys rushed to the courts yesterday seeking to stop the deportation of several Venezuelans who are refugee and asylum seekers. However, even after the judge granted the stay, it was too late as they were already placed on a Coast Guard vessel and taken to South Trinidad where a Venezuelan vessel took them back to Venezuela.

Attorney CJ Williams applied on behalf of 29 persons who have refugee status.

A total of 93 Venezuelans who were at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) and the Chaguaramas heliport were deported to their country. “We filed an application for judicial review for 29 persons; the leave was granted, but by the time we filed the application and it was heard in court by 3 p.m., the boat had already left. So now, it’s just to pick up the pieces and see who is here and not here,” Williams said in a telephone interview with the Express.
