What is the Peace Initiative?

Peace, built the public-health way.

Violence in our communities is not random. It follows patterns: cycles of retaliation, limited economic opportunity, broken trust, and the absence of anyone positioned to step in before conflict turns deadly. Enforcement alone has not broken these cycles.

The Peace Initiative, delivered by the Quantum Foundation, treats violence the way we treat any threat to public health: as something that can be understood, prevented, and reduced over time. It brings together the people who hold influence in our communities, the institutions that hold authority, and the partners who can open real pathways forward.

Our framework follows the United Nations model for peace, adapted for urban Caribbean life — from preventing conflict, to making peace, to holding it, to building a better future.

Delivered by — the Quantum Foundation, Princes Court, 15–17 Keate Street, Port of Spain. Communities are partners in the solution, not problems to be fixed.

Why now?

The moment is open.

In August 2026, influential cultural figures from historically divided communities came together publicly in the spirit of peace. Carried across national and regional media, communities such as East Port of Spain and Laventille felt the shift: a softening of tensions and a growing sense of One Trinidad and Tobago.

That hope is real. But hope on its own does not last.

The Peace Initiative exists to give that hope structure — so a public moment becomes a sustained system and good intentions become real opportunity.

How it works

The Peace Transition Pathway.

Four stages, one cycle: prevent violence before it starts, make peace where it erupts, hold it together, then build something better that lasts.

1 · PreventEngage before violence. Early dialogue, trusted community voices, and open channels that identify risks before they escalate.
2 · Make peaceAgree to a truce. Respected intermediaries — artists, faith leaders, community heads — facilitate agreement and build public support.
3 · Hold the peaceStabilise and monitor. Community-led monitoring, rapid response to tensions, and a visible, trusted presence that prevents retaliation.
4 · Build a better tomorrowTransform communities. Real opportunities in jobs, skills, and education, with support to move into lawful, productive lives.
