Geospatial Solutions and the SDGs

The United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outline 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality and environmental degradation. Achieving these goals requires robust data, effective monitoring and informed decision-making. Geospatial information-encompassing satellite imagery, geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data analytics, has emerged as a critical tool in this endeavor.

 

The UN General Assembly has acknowledged the vital contribution of geospatial information in supporting the 2030 Agenda and its indicators. This acknowledgment establishes a clear responsibility for the global community to fully embed geospatial data into their sustainable development efforts. However, achieving this requires addressing the “geospatial digital divide”-a disparity that highlights the uneven adoption and application of geospatial technologies across countries. Bridging this divide is especially urgent in many developing nations, where limited access to geospatial tools and infrastructure hinders progress toward data-driven decision-making and inclusive development.

 

The first step in addressing this disparity is the adoption of the SDG Geospatial Roadmap- a strategic framework developed by the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) to guide the integration of geospatial information into the monitoring and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

The Roadmap acknowledges that although official statistics are fundamental to the SDG framework, they are not sufficient on their own, especially when they lack the necessary quality, granularity, and timeliness. Given the strong reliance of many SDG indicators on geographic context, it is essential to incorporate geospatial information, Earth observation data, and other forms of location-based evidence into the processes of producing, measuring, monitoring, and disseminating SDG indicators. To fully realize the goals, these spatial data sources must be more systematically and holistically integrated into national and global statistical systems.[link to webpage]

  1. Enabling more comprehensive reporting of the SDGs to the global level in into the UN SDG Database, but also at the national level in publicly accessible dashboards and databases that also provide locally relevant information.
