The Brechin Castle Solar Plant Project in Trinidad and Tobago

The Quantum Foundation has partnered with LATNOVVA which specialises in the mechanical assembly of large photovoltaic solar panels in several continents on the Brechin Castle Solar Plant Project. The Project advances the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by helping to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of climate change by reducing carbon-intensive production and carbon leakage.

Details of the project

The Brechin Castle Solar PV Park is a ground-mounted solar project planned over five hundred and eighty-seven acres. It is expected to lower the carbon dioxide emissions by 150,000 tonnes annually and reduce the gas demand from Trinidad’s power generation which, in turn, will allow for the sale of this gas to LNG and petrochemical markets.

In July 2019, bp, Shell and Lightsource bp formed a consortium and submitted a proposal in response to the Government’s Request for Proposals to build, own, operate, and supply up to 130 MW of renewable power to Trinidad and Tobago’s national grid.

The solar park will help Trinidad and Tobago achieve its Paris Accord commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the power generation section by 30% by 20230.

The project is expected to generate 225,303 MWh electricity and supply enough clean energy to power 31,500 households.

Value of the project to Trinidad and Tobago

The solar castle project in Trinidad and Tobago is the prime step to securing energy security. It is the catalyst for Trinidad and Tobago’s clean energy transition, a phenomenon to which many international investors have developed an increasing appetite. Its successful model in Trinidad and Tobago will be exported into Latin America, Central America and other Small Island Developing States across the Caribbean, jumpstarting a clean energy revolution across these regions.

The Role of the Quantum Foundation

The Quantum Foundation executes strategic partnerships that further the clean energy transition agenda in Trinidad and Tobago while scaling the global collective impact of business against a backdrop of decarbonisation. As a driver of the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and the UN SDGs, the Foundation assists LATNOVVA in adopting a corporate sustainability model that accelerates clean energy transition initiatives in the Commonwealth Caribbean.

For the Brechin Castle Project, the Quantum Foundation provides business process outsourcing services to LATNOVVA. This is significant because it allows foreign investors like LATNOVVA to invest in sustainable projects with local people on the ground executing the initiatives. Business process outsourcing provides for an affordable ease of business that ensures that the domestic territories have a hand in their own sustainable development.
